I didn't manage the four-month-update, because I was too busy. In a related note, I've been back at work for a month now.

Sam continues his reign as the cutest and happiest little guy ever. He's small for his age, but hitting every other developmental milestone. He loves being read to, looks at the books, and has started grabbing them as we read to him. He seems to really enjoy peek-a-boo, which is a sign that he's developing object permanence and/or recognizing us. There are a few toys that I think he's starting to recognize, because he seems to really like them. During tummy time he usually rolls over, but sometimes he'll play with a toy, or even try to scootch forward.

He sleeps just fine -- most nights we get a chunk of 5-6 hours, woo-hoo! And breastfeeding is going well. I think he wants a lot of comfort nursing in the evenings -- especially on Fridays -- and that's fine. He needs to gain a bit of weight anyways.

Going back to work has gone fairly well, I think. I missed it more than I thought I would. The cost of daycare is really good motivation to get shit done at work. That, and I don't have the time, energy, or desire to work during evenings or weekends. Now that I have a kid, I feel this need to be successful at work and provide for Sam. Men are often portrayed as feeling this way, but it doesn't come up with women. I don't know if it's because the narrative of working women is often presented as "the struggle to balance work and family", and not "the pressure to financially support the family", or what.

Pumping is going well so far. There's only been one day that I pumped less than what he ate at daycare. I can pump at my desk, but goddamn, pumping is a royal pain in the ass. He won't be ready for solids for a while, but I can't wait until I can go down to two pumping sessions a day.

My favorite!

Have you tried dropping to two pumps? I found I didn't really get more with three than with two, with appropriate timing.

I might try it some day. But I don't get great output on the right -- never more than 3 oz., and usually only 2 oz. I once had a delayed pumping session, and got 5 oz. on the left, but still only 2 on the right.

I've tried different size flanges, feeding more on the right, feeding left on the right, and nothing has affected it. Maybe I just have lower supply on that side.

Aw, thanks! He gets those ears from me (and my dad), poor guy.
