Sam is nine months old (as of yesterday!), and the past month and a half have been a blast. Sometime in there he's shifted from interacting with us to communicating with us. We have exchanges of blowing raspberries at each other. He'll shake his head back and forth, and get very excited if we do that back at him. He's started high-fiving and waving (next up: the terrorist fist jab), and is starting to understand when to wave. All these exchanges make him very happy.

It's all very cool, because he's not talking, but it seems like these are all ways of us telling each other, "Hello! I am here! You are here! I love you!"

Also, he is properly crawling, although he's still faster at the inchworm method.

He is also still crazy kicking all the time. Here's the most recent video of him kicking, behind the cut:
kicky Sam! )

Seriously, he is crazy active, as can be seen in all these videos. I guess it's no surprise, as he was always a very wriggly fetus. Maybe, uh, I should cut back on the caffeine?

Right! Life is good! I know I keep saying this, but 9 months is a very fun age.

Sam is very, very close to crawling -- he often gets up on all fours and rocks back and forth. Occasionally, he'll move one of his hands. More rarely, he'll try moving a knee. He must be close to putting it all together.

There are some other cool developments lately:

  • He was playing with two toys so that they were interacting with each other (holding a block and hitting it with a giraffe). There have been plenty of times that he's been holding two toys, but this was new. It's never even occurred to me that it was a specific and advanced skill until I saw him do it for the first time.
  • I think he's figuring out various signs of affection. He'll give you a giant grin if you kiss his forehead.
  • He's starting to figure out waving.
  • He's figuring out how to clap! So much fun. He loves it when I lay on the floor next to him and clap. He'll totally get the Michigan fight song by fall.

And that's all in the last two weeks! Dang. What's really surprising is that he's also teething, and he's still sleeping well!

(7 1/2 months old! Such a fun age.)

I didn't manage the four-month-update, because I was too busy. In a related note, I've been back at work for a month now.

Yesterday, Sam turned three months old! He celebrated by having an ear infection, poor guy!

Even with an ear infection, he is the happiest little guy out there. He loves to kick kick kick, and a couple weeks ago he started interacting with toys! I think he's also deliberately reaching for the toys on the playmat, but I'm not sure. Music seems to make him really happy, but honestly, he's just a happy guy.

Breastfeeding is going well -- he's gained two pounds in the last month -- and I'm working on improving my pump output. We're having a bit of trouble getting him to take breastmilk from a bottle, but I think it's because he's sick.

Sleeping is also good -- he will actually fall asleep on his own if he's swaddled! And sleepy, of course. It doesn't work if he's playful. We had a good nap schedule for a while, but again, that has sort of fallen apart with him being sick.

And now for the milestones -- again from What to Expect the First Year, because I'm tired and don't want to look them up in the AAP guide to the first year:

And of course, the gratuitous adorable picture of Sam!

Looking ahead

Sam will be two months old tomorrow! And it will be a crazy day -- doctor's appointment (with shots, lucky guy) and traveling down to L.A. Then his first plane ride is on Thursday, to my parents' for Christmas!

Yesterday, Sam turned one month old!

This has been the fastest month of my life.

Progress report, for my reference )
And right now he's sleeping on my chest as I type, so I'm pretty happy and cozy right now.
